Chapter 9

He was at her house when she got home. She recognized the sports car a block away and emitted a scathing, unladylike curse. Couldn't he take a hint? If she had wanted to talk to him, she would have taken his calls.

It rankled even more that he was having a jolly good time with Brandon on the den floor when she entered the room, slinging her purse and briefcase into a chair and assessing the domestic scene with a scowl instead of a smile.

"Hey, Mom, Worth's here!"

"So I see."

Worth was sprawled on his stomach on the carpet. Brandon was straddling the small of his back and beating him about the head and shoulders with a Nerf baseball bat.

"I hope you've come to rescue me," he said to her over his shoulder. He managed to roll over, grasp the boy around the waist, and lift him up, so that Brandon's arms and legs dangled above him. Brandon whooped with glee. Worth's face turned red with exertion.

Through clenched teeth he gasped, "Lord, you're getting heavy. When you were a baby, I could hoist you up like this and keep you there for hours."

He lowered the boy to the floor and, much to Brandon's delight, made a production of struggling into a sitting position and regaining his breath.

"Do it again, Worth. Or lift me up by my heels and hold me upside down."

"Leave him alone, Brandon. He's tired." Cyn detested her waspish tone of voice. It instantly dispelled their cheerfulness. Brandon gazed up at her with hurt and confusion showing on his small face.

"Maybe later," Worth said, ruffling the boy's hair. "Give me a hand up." Brandon took his hand and hauled him to his feet. "Hi," he said to Cyn, stuffing in his shirttail, which had come out during his scuffle with Brandon.

"Hello."

"How are you?"

"Fine. You?"

"Fine."

"Where's my mother?"

"She went to get Charlie so I could be introduced properly."

"Oh."

Much as she wanted to avoid looking at him, she couldn't seem to drag her eyes away. He must have just come from his health club, because he was dressed in an old pair of jeans, a faded polo shirt, and ancient Dock-Sides with no socks. His hair was disheveled, as though he'd driven his car with the windows open.

It seemed imperative that she avoid looking directly into his eyes, but was powerless to resist his gaze. His eyes bore into hers like truth-seeking blue lasers.

Their long gaze was finally interrupted by the appearance of Ladonia, who proudly ushered in her intended. As introductions were made, the two men shook hands.

"Charlie, this is breaking my heart, you know," Worth said with a theatrical sigh. "I've been after this woman for years."

Ladonia affectionately patted his cheek. "I'm sorry, Worth. He was just too sexy to resist."

Her statement caused Charlie to blush and Worth to laugh and Cyn to wish that she felt like laughing too. The best she could do was force a smile.

Ladonia said, "Charlie wants to take me out tonight to repay me for the nights he's had dinner here.
